What are Personal Home Pages?

SNET Internet Personal Home Pages (PHP) is Connecticut's home on the Web! With a Personal Home Page, you can create and publish a Web site on SNET Internet, viewable by anybody on the Internet.

You may not use your Personal Home Page for commercial purposes. If you are interested in setting up a commercial site, you may wish to consider using the SNET Internet Yellow Pages or SNET Web Hosting.

SNET Internet Personal Home Pages provides the tools, graphics, and resources to help you create cool pages--no matter how much or how little you know about the Web.

Even if you've never heard of HTML before, you can publish a page with the Wizard--which allows you to choose from a variety of templates and professionally-created graphics.

Experienced Web publishers can dig around in the Toolbox to find software programs that make designing professional-looking pages easier. They can publish their pages using FTP.

What do Personal Home Pages cost?
SNET Personal Home Pages are included free to all unlimited SNET Internet subscribers.

Standard plan subscribers can get 5 megabytes of PHP Web space for just $4.95/month.

Additional storage space is not currently available. SNET Internet reserves the right to change pricing at any time. Other terms and conditions may apply.

How do I get a Personal Home Page?
If you are an SNET Internet subscriber, all you need to do is sign up online for a Personal Home Page and you'll be ready to start building your page. You can sign up at the Personal Options site. (If you do not know your Web address, you have not signed up yet.)

If you are not an SNET Internet subscriber, begin by signing up for SNET Internet service, then come back and register for PHP.

Can I try it before I start?
Yes. You can try the PHP service--including the Wizard (in trial mode), the Toolbox, and these Help files--without being a subscriber. In the trial Wizard, you will be able to try all of the templates and features. However, you will not be able to save your page (which means it won't be visible to other viewers). Until you subscribe to PHP, you will not be able to use the File Manager.

What is the Wizard?
The PHP Wizard is at your service, helping you to make a Web page without the hassles of learning HTML. By providing a variety of thematic templates and graphics, the Wizard allows beginners to build a home on the Web. As soon as you've finished designing your page in the Wizard, just click "Save" and it will be viewable by anybody on the Web.

Do I have to use the Wizard to create my page?
No. If you who want to create your pages by hand, you can use any page editing tool or write the pages using HTML. Then, you can FTP the files to your directory on the PHP server. Once on the server, they are accessible on the Web. You can even make quick edits and manage your files online using the File Manager.

What is the File Manager?
The File Manager lets you view, create, edit, rename, and delete the files in your directory on the server--right from your browser!

Who can see my page once I publish it?
Your published Personal Home Page will be accessible to anybody on the Web--including all SNET Internet subscribers. We plan to maintain a listing of PHP pages, so that others can find your site from the SNET Internet home page. Of course, you can always remove your name from the list.

What about security? Can anyone change my page?
No. Your Personal Home Page is protected by your SNET Internet login name and password. Before you can change your page, you must log in to the PHP system.

If I download software from the Web will SNET make sure it is virus-free and OK to use?
No. You are responsible for any content you include on your Web site and for any software you download. To minimize your risk, we suggest you download software only from reliable sources. Scan files for viruses after your download them.

How much storage space do I get for my Personal Home Page?
Five megabytes of file storage space is provided to all SNET PHP subscribers.

What happens if I need more space?
While five megabytes of space should be enough to hold a very large Web site (for example, the entire SNET Internet site is less than 4 megabytes!), someday you may find yourself approaching the five-megabyte limit. Although you cannot increase this limit, you can almost always free up space by pruning unnecessary files. For more information about conserving space, please see How can I use my disk space more efficiently?

Can I put my business on PHP?
No. This service is for non-commercial pages only. If you are interested in getting your business online, please visit SNET's Web Hosting page.

Does SNET Internet monitor Personal Home Pages?
No. SNET Internet does not review, prescreen, or edit user sites. Members are solely responsible for the contents of their sites. It is your responsibility to make sure your site does not violate any laws or the SNET Internet Personal Home Page's Terms and Conditions. SNET Internet will investigate and respond to complaints received regarding member sites.

Will SNET Internet ever suspend a customer's service or PHP account?
SNET Internet reserves the rights to suspend or discontinue any customer account or PHP service that is in violation of either the SNET Internet Service Agreement or SNET Internet Personal Home Page's Terms and Conditions. We reserve the right to investigate and take the appropriate action regarding any complaints received about a web site's contents. Typically, the account owner will be notified and given a reasonable amount of time to correct or respond to the complaint. In the most serious cases, we reserve the right to immediately suspend and deny access to your PHP site if it violates any laws or the SNET Internet Service's Terms and Conditions.

How do I log in?
To log in to the PHP system, first make sure you have signed up (to sign up, click "sign up" on the PHP home page). Then, in the boxes labeled "Login name" and "Password" on the PHP Home Page, type your SNET Internet login name and password. Then click "Log In."

How do I view my Personal Home Page?
Once you create a Web page (either using the Wizard or by hand), you can view your page by typing its location (also known as "uniform resource locator," or URL) into your browser. The location of your page is shown on the PHP home page once you've logged in. It is also shown at the top of the Wizard screen.

Why does the Personal Home Pages site use cookies?
A cookie is a small bit of information a Web site asks your browser software (like Netscape) to store for a specific length of time. The information--usually a short word, phrase, or number--is placed in a special file on your computer's hard drive, along with any other cookies you may have received. When you next visit the same Web site, it can ask your browser software to send the cookie back. This allows the Web site to recognize you as a previous visitor.

In the Personal Home Pages site, cookies verify that a visitor has logged in and help us keep track of what page to show. If we didn't send a cookie to your browser, you would have to log in every time you moved to a different page! Naturally, we do not store your SNET Internet login name or password in the cookie we send. Instead, we store a short random number. This number identifies you while you use the PHP Web site. If you leave the site for more than 20 minutes, the cookie expires, and you will have to log in when you next return.

If you refuse to accept cookies, you will not be able to use the site. Instead, consider building your Personal Home Page on your local computer system and then publishing it via FTP.

Is it safe to type my username and password when I log in?
Because Personal Home Pages will only be available to our SNET Internet customers, we feel the risk of password exposure is minimal. Your username and password travel along our private network to the PHP server. Unless you log in to PHP from a different network connection (other than by dialing in to SNET Internet), your username and password are safe.

As always, we suggest you choose a password that is difficult to guess and change it periodically.
